  • If we take the American roulette wheel, at every spin of the ball the probability of a specific number winning is 1/38 (1 chance out of 38). Let us presume that the number 20 emerged as a winner two consecutive times. At the third spin, the probability for the number 20 to win is again 1/38, or the exact probability as any of the remaining numbers on the wheel.
  • Many British roulette players enjoy this bet. 20, and either 30 or 36 as four separate straight bets. This would cost $8.00 for basic betting. The third sector to consider involves 3 split bets (9/12, 26/29, and 28/31) and six straight bets, including the 3, 7, 14, 18, 22, and 35. In this case, your wager per spin would be $9.00.

A popular roulette betting strategy is the quadrant strategy, which involves betting on fixed sections of the wheel and green baize. This is not to be confused with the Three Quadrant Strategy, by the way, which is more of a hedging strategy.

Search “roulette tips online” and read through literature on the game, and you may well be surprised with the amount of content that is out there. Everyone seems to be searching for winning roulette strategies.

There’s a useful library of roulette information out there- but as ever, on the Internet, there’s a lot of rubbish too.

The actual system you use is up to you, but the fact that you are planning what you are doing before you hit the tables is a good attitude to take, even if it is as simple as setting clearly defined stop loss and take profit levels, and sticking to the adage that you should never bet more than you can afford to lose.

The Quadrant Strategy: What is it and how does it Work?

A popular roulette betting strategy is the quadrant strategy, which involves betting on fixed sections of the wheel and green baize. This is not to be confused with the Three Quadrant Strategy, by the way, which is more of a hedging strategy.

The popularity of this system stems from theories of wheel bias- the theory that certain sectors of the wheel are hotter than others, due to slight imperfections in the wheel. This is not going to happen in a virtual roulette game, obviously, as a virtual roulette wheel is powered by a perfect algorithm to simulate a perfect wheel. Theoretically, you might experience some wheel bias playing live roulette (try Betfair Live Roulette) or at a land-based casino.

To play this strategy, simply split the wheel into four quadrants of nine numbers (you’ll need a notepad). Check out our roulette layout page to help you. This is often easier to do at a casino that has a racetrack betting layout option as the numbers are arranged as they are on the actual wheel.

Quadrant Strategy Tip

To get an Idea of how this system might play out, try a low table limit game like 20p roulette, save the numbers that make up your quadrant as a favourite bet and play 10 auto spins at a low bet amount. This will give you a fast overview of the system.

Choose one quadrant and place your bets, with individual number bets on the members of the quadrant. Back at least 5 or 6 numbers within a quadrant or go up to the maximum 9, as this maximises your table coverage and your odds of the ball dropping in. You can also supplement the bet with lower risk betting options such as odds and evens, black and red or one of the three numbered columns.

You can either bet on the same quadrant, or switch around- it makes no difference to the odds. Bear in mind that if there are imperfections in the wheel, they will be tiny. People who have succeeded in identifying hot zones in the past, have used technology to help them. And once the casinos found out about the flaw, they fixed the wheels pretty quickly!

The quadrant strategy, like any other roulette system, will not alter the odds you get at the table. These are set by the physical design of the wheel and the payout rates of each of the bets. But if you are a player who likes to cover around 25% of the table, it’s a handy way of putting some method in your play. Most online roulette tables these days will allow you to save a certain amount of customised betting layouts.

You can also achieve a 9 number bet with a 6-line bet and street bet, of course, as long as you don’t overlap them. But they won’t be fixed in one quadrant.

Relatively Low Coverage

Bear in mind that the Quadrant strategy is a relatively low coverage system (medium to high variance), so you will need to steel yourself for runs of losses. But, if one of your numbers hits, the payout will be higher on that bet.

With 9 numbers, you will be covering just under a quarter of the table (24.3%). The payout will be just under 4:1 (3.89:1). If you bet 9 chips and win, you will get 35 chips back, plus your original bet. Ideally you want to be winning on your first, second or third spin on every quartet of spins.
